Why We Use Bamboo in Our Van Conversions

Rover Pod’s innovative sliding kitchen and bed system, built with light, resilient materials for van conversions.

When it comes to building a van interior that looks great, performs under pressure, and stands up to years of use, material choice is everything. At Vanted, we've tried a lot of materials over the years. Bamboo — specifically LETO Bamboo by Bord. It has become one of our go-to choices for tables, bench tops, and surface finishes. Here's why.

## The Challenge with Van Build Materials

A van interior faces conditions that most furniture never has to deal with. Temperature swings from cold overnight to a hot summer afternoon. Vibration on every road trip. Weight restrictions — every kilogram counts when you're loading up for a weekend away. And it still needs to look the part.

Timber is a popular choice, but standard hardwoods are heavy. MDF is affordable but doesn't handle moisture well. Plywood is solid, but the surface finish often needs additional work.

Bamboo hits a different set of numbers entirely.

What is LETO Bamboo?

LETO Bamboo by Bord is a range of premium bamboo panels engineered specifically for cabinetry and interior applications. The panels are produced from sustainably sourced bamboo — one of the fastest-growing materials on the planet — and processed into a dense, consistent sheet product with a clean, distinctive grain.

Bord offers LETO Bamboo across several formats including plywood, veneer panels, veneer laminate, and paper-back options, which gives us flexibility depending on what the build calls for.

## Why Bamboo Works So Well in Van Builds

### Lightweight Without Sacrificing Strength

Bamboo has an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. In a van build, this matters — less weight means better fuel efficiency, more capacity for gear, and less stress on the vehicle structure. Our bamboo bench tops and table surfaces are noticeably lighter than equivalent hardwood panels, without any compromise on rigidity or durability.

### Surface Finish Straight Off the Sheet

One of the biggest practical advantages of LETO Bamboo is the quality of the surface finish. The grain is tight, consistent, and visually striking — it doesn't need heavy sanding or additional veneer work to look premium. For tables and bench tops that customers will be touching and using every day, that matters.

### Handles the Environment

Van interiors get warm. They cool down overnight. Doors open and close, condensation forms, and the structure flexes constantly in transit. Bamboo is naturally stable and handles these cycles well compared to many timber alternatives. We've had builds out in the field for over a year with LETO Bamboo tops showing no warping or movement.

### Sustainably Sourced

Bamboo is one of the most sustainable building materials available — it regenerates in years, not decades. For customers who care about the environmental footprint of their build, it's a straightforward conversation.

## Where We Use It at Vanted

We use LETO Bamboo primarily for:

- **Fold-down tables** — the surface is hard-wearing and looks clean in both everyday and camping use
- **Bench and kitchen tops** — smooth, food-safe finish that cleans easily
- **Interior panel faces** — where a natural, warm finish is part of the brief
- **Drawer and shelf faces** — lightweight and easy to work with on the CNC

It features in our ROVER Van Conversion Kit and is also available as a specification option on our custom van builds.

## Working with the Material

LETO Bamboo machines well on our CNC and cabinet saw. It holds edges cleanly and takes fixings without splitting, which makes it practical in a workshop environment where precision matters. The consistency across sheets also means colour and grain matching across a build is straightforward — something that can be hit and miss with natural timber.

## Bamboo Van Interiors That Last

The combination of weight, durability, surface quality, and aesthetics makes LETO Bamboo the right call for van builds where the finish needs to be as functional as it is good-looking. It's a material that suits the van life brief — practical, lightweight, and built to last.
